VPFMA NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2024

A Word From The President (Peter Loney)

A new year is upon us and we have a number of changes. Barry Steggall, Andrea Coote and Tammy Lobato have left the committee after having made valuable contributions over many years. Barry, as Vice President, offered sage advice and was a respected contributor to our deliberations. Andrea Coote’s contribution to the Association through her passionate advocacy of support for our members and her involvement in the “Transitioning To Life After Parliament” project underscored the role of our Support and Wellbeing Committee. Tammy Lobato pushed our coming into the digital age and her work in this area has greatly improved our communications with members and our ability to keep them informed. On behalf of our membership I thank each of them for their service to our Association.

Coming onto our Committee to fill the casual vacancy left after the AGM is David M0rris. We look forward to his involvement and the new ideas he will bring.

There remain two consequential casual vacancies on the Committee and Expressions of Interest are sought from VPFMA Financial members interested in contributing. While our priority remains servicing the welfare of our members, the Committee would also welcome expertise in
• the digital area, particularly maintenance of our Website and
• the organisation of events and activities
We are hoping that financial members interested in the work of the Association consider this opportunity, especially those with recent Parliamentary service.

Expressions of interest should be lodged with the Secretary by 17th February by email to:
secretary@vicformermembers.org.au

I outlined in my report to the 2023 AGM that our priorities are support and wellbeing of our members, representation and social activities. These priorities will continue to guide us through the year. We will be seeking to meet with the Parliament’s new Presiding Officers and Clerks at the earliest opportunity to continue the good relationship that has been built. Our Support and Wellbeing committee contacted all those who departed Parliament at the 2022 elections and provided advice to the committee and the Parliament on necessary supports. We will be giving further consideration to the implementation of recommendations from the “Transitioning To Life after Parliament“ report, and there will be opportunities for us to get together socially.

Your committee is planning to have another full schedule of VPFMA activities. This will include a rescheduled garden tour and other functions, visits and activities. Some indicative dates are included in this newsletter and details will be provided closer to the events. I hope that you will be able to join in them.
In the next few weeks we also hope to survey our members regarding the type of events we currently organise and also others we could contemplate.

We are looking forward to an active year and we hope to see you at our functions and events.

Victorian Parliamentary Website
The VPFMA has received a number of queries regarding content on the Victorian Parliamentary Website regarding individual Former MPs. As a part of transferring data from the old to the upgraded Parliamentary sites, some information has been lost but is progressively being restored. Check-in to see what is on your site at https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/about/history-and-heritage/people-who-shaped-parliament/former-members/ and the Parliament advises that research is ongoing to ensure the accuracy of former member information. Email heritage@parliament.vic.gov.au if you have any questions or suggestions.

VPFMA Visiting Former Members In Residential Aged Care Policy
As a part of our ongoing Support & Wellbeing activities The VPFMA has adopted a policy that
“The VPFMA encourages families of Former MPs in care, either at home or in Residential Aged Care, to contact our Secretary (secretary@vicformermembers.org.au) should they wish VPFMA Members to be informed of how direct contact can be made with the family who can then advise the circumstances and arrangements for visitors.”

VPFMA Activities
The VPFMA committee is always interested in potential activities that may interest our members. If you have any suggestions please forward them to our President president@vicformermembers.org.au.
